In the heart of Emilia-Romagna, among the countryside and hills surrounding Bologna, one can often encounter ancient estates, noble palaces, and enchanting castles whose stories echo through the centuries. These places, with their histories and architectures, have become an integral part of the region’s landscape and culture. Hidden within these verdant lands is Villa Giulia, a magnificent 18th-century residence located just a few kilometers from Bologna’s historic center. Villa Giulia’s story is a special one: recently restored, it continues to thrive and shine thanks to the intervention of Fabrizio Cocchi, who chose to take its destiny into his own hands. He transformed its grand noble floor into his private residence, making it his poetic and creative manifesto. Through a series of thoughtful transformations, he infused these spaces with his vision of the world and design, creating a home that reflects his personality and talent. His unmistakable touch has breathed new life into the villa, blending modernity and tradition in a renewed harmony. Each space has been reimagined to honor the villa’s historical essence while also enhancing its natural surroundings. The finished work reveals a continuous dialogue between past and present, nature and culture, where every detail contributes to an atmosphere of refined elegance.
Upon entering the grand monumental hall, once used as a ballroom, one is immediately immersed in an enchanted atmosphere. The Midnight Summer wallpaper immediately draws the eye: a magical, shadowy garden with a dense network of trees, reminiscent of the woodland decorations typical of 18th-century Bolognese taste. The eclecticism that defines Cocchi’s style emerges in the selection of furnishings: objects from every corner of the world and from diverse cultures and historical periods harmonize seamlessly with the wild ambiance of the hall. Among them are numerous vintage and contemporary pieces, as well as items designed by Cocchi himself. The large wardrobe, sourced directly from China, has been enhanced with delicate gold leaf. The low cabinet, on the other hand, is lined with brass profiles and adorned with new Art Deco-inspired handles. The entire hall resembles a private gallery of contemporary art, where sculptures, paintings, design objects, and a collection of Japanese bronzes create an intriguing interplay of contrasts with the natural environment outside. The bedroom reflects the same meticulous attention to detail, featuring a custom-designed bed upholstered in a Dedar fabric, with a 1700s Coromandel Chinese screen serving as the headboard. Fornasetti wallpaper adds a touch of whimsy to the space. The master bathroom is entirely designed around the contrast between black and cappuccino marble, adorned with wallpaper that mimics the texture of eel skin. Without any natural light, the design leverages artificial lighting, turning the absence of windows into an advantage: the dark tones, accentuated by the lighting, create a dramatic three-dimensionality and a uniquely captivating atmosphere.
Anyone who crosses the threshold of Villa Giulia is inevitably captivated by its aura. Here, light takes center stage, skillfully managed to transform every corner of the home into a welcoming and evocative space. The interplay between natural and artificial light dresses the spaces and sets the rhythm of the day: in the morning, sunlight gently warms the bedrooms and kitchen, filling the rooms with a soft glow. By afternoon, the light shifts to the grand hall, intensifying and creating chiaroscuro effects that highlight the details of the furnishings. As the day comes to an end, the magic unfolds: the orange hues of the sunset flood through the large window, igniting the space. It’s spectacular to see how, at that hour, everything transforms. The furniture seems to awaken and come to life: the finishes shimmer as if glowing with heat, the sun’s rays fracture and sparkle through the crystals of the wall sconces, while shadows emphasize the textures of surfaces. The landscapes depicted on the walls take on a three-dimensional quality, giving the sensation of being enveloped and transported into a world of pure beauty. In this interplay of light and shadow, reflections and glimmers, every detail is accentuated, and every element contributes to creating a visual experience and an atmosphere that is serene yet vibrant, intimate yet grand. At Villa Giulia, each day ends with an explosion of colors and sensations, an experience that takes your breath away and renews itself daily, enchanting all who live or visit there.
