BOLOGNA VILLA

INTRODUCTION

Far from the usual paths and destinations, Bologna offers countless extraordinary experiences. Every street in this city is steeped in history, culture, and secrets: magnificent private gardens, sumptuous historic residences, frescoes, and ancient mosaics are hidden from prying eyes but stand as witnesses to the grand and fascinating past of the Emilian capital. These treasures serve as custodians of the stories and events that have shaped the city’s life. One of Bologna’s unique characteristics is its multiculturalism: for centuries, distant worlds and diverse cultures have met and blended here, enriching the city’s essence without altering its soul but instead adding new shades to its identity. Among the magnificent historic residences in the city center that remain habitable today is an 18th-century palazzo, entirely frescoed and recently restored, with a design aimed at enhancing the timeless aura that permeates its rooms. The main goal was to renew the space without compromising its original charm, creating a functional and stunning environment for an international client eager to welcome guests from around the world into these walls, offering them a taste of Italian—and specifically Bolognese—beauty. The project focused on striking the perfect balance between preserving original elements and introducing modern comforts, telling the story of Italian heritage through a contemporary lens.

THE MOOD BOARD

The restoration and renovation project demanded a meticulous and detail-oriented approach. The ancient ballroom, once the home’s main representative space and heart, was transformed into a spacious and inviting living room, where the original fireplace remains the focal point and protagonist of the space. Around it, a welcoming and informal living area was arranged. The color palette played a crucial role in shaping the project’s identity: neutral tones dominated by beige, ivory, and gold echo the colors of the original frescoes, reminiscent of the warm hues characteristic of Bologna. The fabrics were chosen with particular care, including sand-colored velvets with refined mustard trim, playing with tone-on-tone shades to create an elegant and timeless atmosphere. The furnishings were selected to ensure a perfect balance between classical elements and contemporary comfort, while decorative items such as busts and ornaments coexist harmoniously with generous sofas and comfortable seating. The lighting, completely reimagined compared to the original, was designed to highlight both architectural and decorative elements. A special system of uplighting enhances the beauty of the frescoes and stucco work, imbuing the home with an almost museum-like aura. Meanwhile, large lamps made with aged-mirror effects illuminate the rooms, multiplying points of light and creating reflective patterns that amplify the perception of space.

EXPERIENCE

The final result is an environment that perfectly blends history and modernity. Today, the villa serves as a space where the historic prestige of Bologna meets the needs of modern, international living. Each room is shaped by an elegant balance between preservation and innovation, aesthetics and functionality. New design elements coexist with distinctly historical features, creating a virtuous and harmonious dialogue between different eras. The villa is now both a prestigious residence and a representative space, where the client can host international guests, offering them an immersive experience in the excellence of Italian design and history. Visitors to Italy often dream of exploring museums while also indulging in a bit of “la dolce vita.” This home seeks to provide a unique experience that combines both aspects, serving as what can be described as a livable private museum. The result is a space that never feels ordinary—one that amazes, welcomes, and enchants, offering its guests a window into the full breadth of Italian beauty.
